The Maldives National University (Dhivehi: ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ ޤައުމީ ޔުނިވަރސިޓީ) is the first university to be opened in the Maldives. Inaugurated on February 15, 2011, the university was previously known as the Maldives College of Higher Education which was established on January 1, 1999, as part of a restructuring and rationalization of all government-run post-secondary education in Maldives. The university is the only public degree-granting institution on the nation. The university offers a range of degrees, diplomas, and certificates, with particular emphasis on engineering, health science, education, tourism, and management. The average enrollment at MNU is around 4,000 students in long-term (that is, more than one academic year) programs, and around 2,000 in short-term (shorter than one academic year) courses. The college was administered by a council called Academic Senate, chaired by the Chancellor, Dr. Mohamed Zahir Hussain. Executive head of the university is the Vice Chancellor Dr.Hassan Hameed. ==History== MCHE was established on 1 October 1998, though what is today known as MCHE was there since 1973 as Allied Health Services Training Centre which later was renamed as Faculty of Health Sciences established by the Ministry of Health. The college was administered by a council called College Council, headed by Mr. Abdul Sattar Moosa Didi.
